Within the scope of this project, a Statement of Work (SOW) on customs brokerage and clearance processes as part of supply chain optimization for EMEA trade compliance was translated from English into Turkish.
CHALLENGES
- The source text contains detailed processes and country-specific instructions on how to proceed with import and export activities, customs procedure, VAT reporting as well as references to various metrics, audits, and documentation procedures, which require preliminary research about such procedures to become familiar with individual process steps as well as the overall context.
- References to various laws and regulations on international trade, customs, duty and taxes, etc. as well as local legislations were made in the source text, which call for referring to such regulatory framework during the translation process for accuracy.
- The source text also contains country-specific details, including some elements to which particular attention must be paid to avoid any omission or ambiguity.
- Some procedures, e.g., reporting metrics, etc., are explained in detail, in which an informative and descriptive style must be used in the target text in the same manner as in the source text.
- The addendum of the SOW contains customs rules to be observed by the customs broker, in which a formal style similar to that of a legal document was used with specific terminology on customs procedure.
SOLUTIONS

- Applicable laws and regulations as well as other reference documents on customs brokerage were reviewed and used to check the accuracy of the terms used in the target text.
- Special attention was given to country-specific information and procedures while some original document names and system abbreviations were kept in the target text with additional information provided to avoid any confusion.
- An informative and descriptive style was used to explain certain process steps in detail to ensure that the overall process is followed correctly by the customs broker without any omission.
- The legal terminology in the addendum was reviewed and used accordingly in line with the legal framework and internal procedures of the company.
