NSK is a bearings manufacturer and operates in various industries. In this project, we were commissioned to translate a short sample text on bearings for inverter motors manufactured by NSK from English into Turkish.
CHALLENGES
- The source text contained challenging technical terminology since it was heavily focused on the technical specifications of an innovative product that was recently invented by the company and explained the working principle in detail.
- The source text also included description of various mechanical and chemical processes such as electrolytic corrosion, mechanical characteristics of inverter motors, etc., which require background knowledge of such processes in addition to using the right technical terminology.
- The company is known to have a well-established terminology use and literature on their website, so the source text should not be translated independently without taking into consideration the available content on their official website and technical data sheets. One striking example is that the company prefers using a Turkish equivalent for bearings that is spelled slightly different from the original dictionary item; however, this word has commonly been used throughout their internal documents for a long time and it eventually became the adopted version of that term.
SOLUTIONS
- The client has provided us with a glossary of their own containing technical terminology most frequently used in their technical documents. In addition to independent terminology research and using other available technical glossaries, this custom glossary was used to check terminology in the first place before referring to other resources for technical terminology.
- The product described in the source text was reviewed on the company’s own website to gather more in-depth information about the product as well as its technical specifications to better understand the context and working principle.
- Research into phenomena such as electrolytic corrosion, mechanical characteristics of inverter motors, rotational frequency, etc. was made based on web search to become more familiar with the product and its characteristics.
